Abstract:
This study sought to identify the teachers' and studcnts' pcrccption of the strategies to enhance students' interest in Art learning in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. In carrying out the study, the research formulated five (5) research questions. The instrument for this research was a researcher-developed questionnaire, which has two parts. Part one sought personal information about the teacher. Part two comprised thirty-three item questions in five clusters focusing on Manipulative skills, Instructional resources available, Best Methods of teaching and motivational strategies that can enhance students' interest in Art. There was also an investigation into the factors that inhibit students' interest in Art learning. The questionnaire was administered to 40 Art teachers and 240 students randomly sampled for the study in Nsukka Local Government Area.Mean sources were used to answer the five research questions. Part of the findings revealed that students acquire skills for a number of art works such as designing of book covers,posters,costume, and textiles. other skills acquired by students include simple carving and moulding. The students learn better when they are in contact with materials under moderate motivation. Rewards play an important role in the learning of Art while interest is generated due to the understanding of the needs, values, benefits and career prospects in Art. It was however found that mainly availability of art materials and teaching aids enhance Art learning.
