News Paper Coverage Of Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting (Chogm) Abuja 2003: A Content Analysis Of Four National Dailies

The study investigates press coverage of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Abuja 2003. Four selected Nigeria Daily Newspapers – Daily Times New Nigeria, Thisday and The Guardian –were used. The necessity of evaluating the press coverage of the event becomes imperative for a number of reasons. First the CHOGM 2003 in the greatest international event to be hosted in Nigeria after nearly 40 years and more significantly coming on the heels of Nigeria’s successful shake-off of its hamstringing parish state status. Moreso, given the importance attached to the event in terms of its cost implication, the unquantifiable international goodwill expectations/potentials and varied public opinion on the meeting, the need to ascertain the level of coverage becomes overriding. Related literature was reviewed, relevant elements of the study were coded and analysed. The findings of the study indicate that the summit coverage was adequate. However, the post CHOGM reports are entirely deficient
