IKORO: Monumental Drums of Igbo People.

In this research, I am using Ikoro drums to show the Igbo ideas of monumentality in sculpture. The paper also gives an insight into the dynamic implication in the interpretation of the concept of monumentality among the Igbo, where the ikoro drum is physically, symbolically/conceptually and functionally monumental. This study is greatly enriched by two major categories of source materials – existing literature on Igbo art and primary information obtained through careful observations and interviews during my field work In this research, vernacular expressions and their translations were used because they help in bring out more authentic meanings of the issues under discussions. The project is presented in five chapters. Chapter one discusses various concepts of monument by different people. It also contains the research problems, approach scope and the aim of the research. Chapter two discusses, broadly the ikoro under the title “What is ikoro?, while chapter three identified ikoro drum types. Ikoro production techniques is discussed in chapter four while the meanings and symbolism on ikoro is discussed in chapter five under the heading: ‘Towrds the Ikoro iconography’. This research, however, does not contain everything on ikoro. My intention is to contribute in bringing the Igbo ikoro culture to a wider audience.
