Utilization of Electronic Commerce in Commercial Banks Operating in Rivers State

The major purpose of this study was to assess the utilization of Electronic Commerce in Commercial Banks Operating in Rivers State. The study utilized a survey research design. Five research questions were answered. Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 confidence level. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit information for the study. The target population comprised 248 respondents made up of bank managers, accountants and supervisors and other bank staff of various commercial banks in Rivers state of Nigeria. The entire population was studied. The research instrument was subjected to face validation by three specialists from the Department of Vocational Teacher Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and three specialists from the Department, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. The reliability coefficient of the instrument of this study was 0.93, which was calculated using Cronbach Alpha Reliability coefficient Test. Questionnaire was administered by personal contact and with the help of five research assistants. 241 copies were duly completed and returned reflecting 97.2 percent return rate. The research questions were answered using mean while the hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Major findings of the study were: (1) twelve parts of network communication that form the component of electronic commerce were found not utilized (2) Six factors were identified as being the achievement envisaged by electronic commerce in Commercial Banks in Rivers State. (3) There was no significant difference in the mean responses of Managers, Accounts and other banking employees, the Supervisors with regard to in the banks (4) There was no significant difference in the mean responses of Managers, Accountants, Supervisors and other bank employees with regard to problems faced by the banks in utilizing electronic commerce in their banking operations in Rivers State. It was concluded that the Managers, Accountant, Supervisors and other bank employees were anaminous in their opinion with regard to the ease of transferring money from one bank to the another without the customers carrying huge sum from city to city. It was recommended that (1) Commercial Banks should identify employees with first degrees and enhance their competency on electronic operation.
